Following Stephen Shore's Footprint

Following Masters' Footprints

The photographer I have tried to imitate is Stephen Shore, and to re-create the particular photo series “uncommon places”, in which he travels across America, hence being able to capture the beauty of the everyday banality.

After studying this photo series, I learnt that Shore’s visual style is characterized by the cold objectivity, precise composition, and vibrant use of colors, and after watching him introduce his own works on a MoMA YouTube clips, I learnt that in his methodology, he puts a lot of thoughtful consideration during his photographic process, with him using a 8x10 view lartge-format camera, so that he can capture something as if looking with the eyes.

His subject matter often includes street scenes, billboards, parking lots, people he met, motel rooms he lived in, captured with a sense of strangeness that turns the ordinary to the extraordinary.

When I attempted to imitate Shore’s visual style, I have paid more attention to the colors in the surroundings, and tried to take photos with the presence of attention and in a state of awareness.
